HAPPY ONE MONTH TO ME!!!

This week it will be my ONE month anniversary. I literally can't believe it. Mission time is so weird. It feels like I've been here for 5 years, but it also feels like I was just home watching all 6 seasons of One tree hill on Netflix. haha Time is flying by and I'm loving it. The days are long but the week's are short. I know it doesn't make any sense, but if you served a mission, you get it.
Well this week was like really good. Like, really good. Every Tuesday, my ward has an activity night, for EVERYONE. I mean, everyone. They have a " be a better teacher class", Zumba, sewing, cooking, basketball, scouts, mutual, and an English Class. It is seriously the coolest thing ever. I really think the Spanish ward back home, or EVERY ward back home should do something like this. It is seriously a great way to get everyone to come to their activities and for everyone to be involved. This ward is so close, and I really believe it's because of these weekly activities. The English class is an awesome way to get contacts to come check out the church too. Every Hispanic wants to learn English, so they come to this free class, learn English, and of course get a little message about Christ too :) win-win. The missionaries are primarily always in the English class because we are usually the only native speakers, we help out the students with their worksheets, and with speaking. It's so fun. It's like I'm at home all over again. I really feel like teaching is talent of mine, and I feel really blessed that because of my experience in being a teacher, it's helped me so much in my mission.

On Wednesday, we met with a less-active girl in our ward. She's been struggling for a while, but she has come a long way, and I can really feel like she wants to change. We spoke to her about The Atonement. I bore my testimony to her about how much my life has changed in just the past two years. She couldn't believe that I had the used the atonement before. We taught her that the atonement is for EVERYONE. Even as missionaries, we are continually repenting and asking for forgiveness because we are NOT perfect. No one is. But all we can do is try. I could see her countenance changing as we talked about how the atonement molds us to be the divine individual Christ sees us to become. She committed to come to church this week and to continue reading her Book of Mormon. She is a true daughter of God, and I think she's starting to see it. On our way home from her house, we felt impressed to go visit a referral we had gotten the week before. We had tried to come see her the Friday before but she wasn't home, so we decided to go try her again. We got there and her whole family was sitting outside just talking in the middle of the day. We started speaking in Spanish, but came to find out they spoke English, so that was embarrassing haha but we asked for the girl who had been referred to us. She came out and we told her about how we had gotten her info. The Elders had contacted her and since she's a single girl, they referred her to us. For privacy sake, I'll call her Maura. Maura is 18, a senior in high school, and she has a 5 month old super cute, chubby little baby :) She lives with her parents and siblings in a very humble area of town and when met with the Elders, was interested in baptizing her baby. So, obviously we told her our views on baptism, and how we believe everyone is born sinless, and how sin comes with decisions, and that we don't believe anyone until the age of eight years old is accountable for their mistakes. She was very receptive to that message and asked us to talk to her more about it. It was pretty funny actually, because usually when you're just meeting someone, you'll get to know them a little, find out their needs, then set up an appointment for another day. But she insisted we teach her then. haha. So we did. We sat outside their house, with a dirt road, and random dogs roaming around, and taught the restoration. We bore our testimonies on the Book of Mormon and how Joseph Smith was a real prophet, chosen in these latter days to translate the word of God. Her mom also sat in on the lesson, and had lots of questions (which a good thing) Maura, just sat a listened, and we could tell the spirit was witnessing to her what we were saying was true. We ended with a prayer, and Maura said it!!! It was very powerful and we were all crying by the end. The Spirit of God was there and it was strong. Never in my entire life thought I would be sitting by a dirt road testifying about the Word of God to complete strangers. But it happened, and it was AMAZING. We placed three Book of Mormons with their family, and invited them to read and ask for themselves if the book was true. It felt so natural. It was the first time I had asked someone to truly ask if the Book of Mormon was true, and it felt so easy. We invited them to come to church, and they promised they would. Sunday came around, and we spoke to Maura that morning and she said she would be there, but she wasn't. I was so sad, I didn't even know what to do. But my sweet companion reminded me that the Lord is is His work. He knows what He is doing. We did our job, we testified of  the gospel's truth, and He will do the rest.

Being a missionary is like a huge emotional roller coaster. You are so close to spirit all the time that you feel everything with more intensity. I feel so much love. Like love I didn't think I could feel for complete strangers the moment I meet them, but I do! It's the weirdest thing! The members in my ward are amazing! They are so loving, and even if they aren't I feel so much love for them anyway. And I don't even know why!?! It's seriously crazy. But I know this blessing is coming from my calling, and I was called to serve in their ward and to love and serve these people. So the Lord has blessed me with this love for so many people I never thought I would ever know. So, when Maura and her family didn't come to church, I felt like I had just been broken up with. So sad, because I wanted them to come feel the spirit and love of the ward and the Lord for themselves. I love Maura and her family, and I know that if it is God's will, and if they put forth effort to learn, they will, and they will know this Gospel is true.

I am so blessed to be serving a mission in these days. Life is not easy for many people here in Houston. It is a humble place where I serve, and I am daily meeting more and more of God's children. What a blessing it is to see the gospel in action, and to see how it changes lives. I am so grateful to be here, doing what I am doing. It is NOT easy. There are many times where I am so exhausted I just want to cry, and go home. But I take a moment, and remember my purpose. This is NOT about me. I have a purpose here and I'm not in it. My purpose is bring others unto Christ. It's not about me crying because I can't watch vampire diaries or go to the beach lol. I am a missionary, and this is my job. I hope you are all trying your best to be obedient and to keep the commandments. The only way to happiness is follow Christ, and keep his commandments. I learn that more and more every single day. Thank you for all your love, I miss you all and hope to hear from you!

WRITE ME letters about your lives and your experiences in becoming closer to Christ. Nothing uplifts a missionary more than hearing that from loved ones <3 But mostly just write me. My mailbox is sad :(

Until next week!

Buenos Dias!

So, I am officially a REAL missionary. I'm in Texas, and I'm a little embarrassed to admit it, but I kinda love it (dun dun duuuun) haha. But seriously, I've enjoyed every minute that I've had here so far. Given, its February and it feels like I'm in Hawaii, so I'll probably be singing a different tune in a couple of months #prayforacoolsummer #icanhashtagifiwantto #imisshashtags :D haha anyways, I'm here and I'm loving it. My compaƱera is Hermana Crandall. She's 23 and from Spanish Fork,Utah, and we might be the exact same person. haha She's hilarious, and a realllly good missionary. She's very diligent and obedient, AND patient. Exactly what I needed in a trainer. I was literally terrified of meeting my trainer. I heard so  many horror stories, and I had such a great experience with my companion and district in the MTC, I was certain I'd get some crazy girl that hated me. Luckily, that is not the case. So, I am very grateful for her and am so happy we get to spend 12 awesome weeks together :)

My mission president and wife are amazing. I almost started crying when I saw them in the airport. I didn't even know why, because I had never met them before, and knew nothing of them but I could instantly feel love for them. They were truly called of God to lead our mission and be our "mission parents" while we are all far away from home. The first few days included flying to the airport, then we traveled to the mission office where we had training and the mission vehicle person completely scared the crap out of me about driving in Houston. Apparently people are like totally cray here and don't abide by simple traffic laws. Like not running red lights, and staying on the right side of the road. NBD. lol But, my companion told me he does this whole illusion so that the 18 year missionaries don't act like they are 18 and actually drive carefully. lol Luckily for me, I've been driving like 5x's longer than all of them, sooo.... I think I'll be okay :) After basic training, we went to the mission home and had our first Mission President interviews and had traditional Texan BBQ. I swear, if I didn't have to exercise every day and if my companion and I hadn't already made a pact to never let the food over take us, I would be coming home around 500 lbs. haha These people KNOW how to eat, and love doing it. haha

Speaking of food, our members LOVE to feed the missionaries. It's amazing. I've never experienced such kindness in my life. The members in our ward love the missionaries and love to have us over. There are three sets of missionaries in the Spanish ward and like tons in the English program too. I don't know the English side very well because they are in a different program/ zone but I'm sure I'll meet them over time. But in my ward, there are us The Hermanas, and then two sets of Elders. We have a pretty big area and we have a CAR. Thank goodness, because I would literally die. haha The elders (pobresitos) are on bikes, and then the other set have a car, but only because they are the zone leaders. Otherwise, they'd be biking it too. The Lord loves his Hermanas. That's why he gives us cars :)

I have only been in my area since Thursday afternoon and we have already had tons of appointments. We have a lot of less actives in our ward, so we have been focusing a lot on them this week. We got a new investigator though on Thursday! She's the daughter in law of a less active and when we went to visit the Hermana, she wasn't there, so we talked to Ibania instead, and in that we got her interested in taking the lessons!! Tender mercies and little miracles happen every day in the field. The Lord has his hand in his work and never lets us falter. This week we went to visit this sister who is slightly on the neurotic side. She's a middle aged woman, never married, no family nearby, keeps to herself. Very sweet lady, but kind of crazy (but still a daughter of God nonetheless lol) anyway, she's been having a hard time due to some things with her former employer, and was just telling us how its been so hard to be happy after all that had happened. And as missionaries, we pray before EVERYTHING. I mean, everything. So, naturally we pray before every appointment and we feel that we are led by the spirit. So, in that meeting with that sister we felt impressed to tell her she needed to forgive her employer because contention is not of God, and you can't obtain the Holy Ghost if you have hatred in your heart. Well, this hermana did not like that. lol. She got REAL mad at us and told us to leave. We obviously did as told, but reminded her of her covenants and that the only way to happiness is through the atonement, so we recommended that she prayed about what we said and see what God had to say about it. The next day at church, she came up to us and apologized for the way she had acted. She said she had prayed and knew were talking through the spirit. That was a small miracle. I would NEVER call someone unto repentance in real life. I don't have the authority or guide to do that as normal person. But as a missionary, I do! I'm not saying I'm going to tell everyone they need to repent, I'm not God! lol But I am disciple of Jesus Christ, and my job is to do as he says. So if the spirit tells me to say something, I will say it. Regardless of the consequences. I truly believe I have a been called to be an instrument in his work, and have already seen so many miracles in the short three days I have spent here in Houston. I cannot wait to bring back His flock to the fold, and to teach others about their divine potential and God's love for them.

I have never felt the Lord's hand more in my life than in the past three weeks. I know what I am doing is exactly what I'm supposed to be doing. I am so grateful, I listened to that still small voice that prompted me to make changes and prepare myself for a mission. I know that this decision will and has affected my life forever. I am SO grateful for all your prayers and pray for each of you each day. Know that God LOVES you! He really, truly does. I feel it, and SEE it every single day. Until we meet again. XOXO

Feb. 11th, 2014

So, it's finally happened. I am done with the MTC. The last two weeks have felt like an eternity yet gone by so fast at the same time. I feel like I'm in a movie watching my life, and I can't even believe its mine! I still can't believe I'm a missionary, and tomorrow I'm going to be a REAL missionary. A real tracting, proselyting, walking 6-8 miles a day, preaching, teaching, enduring to the end missionary. I am so excited and I also feel like I'm going to pass out. I'm a glass case of emotions (as per usual) ;) haha. Anyway, every single person from my zone has already left, except for an elder who's going to my mission. We are the lone survivors of Branch 112. But its okay. I made some of the best friends ever, and I am so grateful for each person I've come across here in the MTC. We all experienced a difficult, challenging journey together, and that's something that will bond us forever. It's so sad because all my Elder friends left Monday and I couldn't even hug them :( But its okay, I gave my Hermana friends extra hugs for them. haha. I imagine this is what a transfer feels like. You bond with people and then they're gone, so sad. But so exciting at the same time, because everyone is leaving to experience their own journeys. I can't wait to reunite with everyone in two years and hear all about their missions.
I've had a few opportunities to "share" my talents. haha I was asked to audition for a solo and was to chosen to sing at the Departure Devotional last Sunday (i forgot to say that last week) in front of the WHOLE MTC. Like, thousands of people. It was so nerve racking but it was so cool to be able to be apart of something really great. I was also asked to sing this past week at our last sacrament meeting, so an elder and a sister in my zone and I did an amazing arrangement of "There is a green hill far away" with the piano and violin. It was seriously beautiful. The MTC has been so much fun, maybe too much fun. haha That's probably why I'm so afraid to leave this safe bubble. Every is so nice to the missionaries here and they don't go inactive if you teach a bad lesson because we're still learning. They feed us, nurture us, teach us... I feel like I'm a little bird about to leave the nest for the first time and have to learn how to survive on my own. haha It's going to be okay. I'm going to be okay, I can do this. All I have to do is rely on what I've always had. My testimony. I could have all the lessons in Preach My Gospel memorized, be an insane scriptorian, and still not be a good missionary, if I didn't believe what I was teaching was true to my core. I have never felt more of a love for my Savior than in the past few weeks. Having to learn to rely 100% on the Lord teaches you that you are not living your life alone. The Lord is guiding you, and carrying you through the times where you might feel you are the most alone.

I have been teaching two investigators and not the TRC "investigators" which are just actors that come to help us. My companion and I found two on our own. The girl Yvette from last week, and another girl Nayeli. Honestly when I'm teaching, all I do is speak from my heart. I say what I feel is right, and what they need to hear. And both of them have taken us aside and told us there really was something different about us. They could feel our genuine sincerity for them. That all we honestly want is for them to find happiness and feel the love of Christ. And maybe they say that to everyone, but I really took it to heart. It made me feel like I was actually making a difference, and that what I'm doing matters. I'm so grateful for this experience, and its only been two weeks. I can't wait to see what happens from now till august 2015. My heart is so full and happy.

Okay, my time is up but I love you all. Thank you all for your prayers and your support. I love you all sooo much, but the Lord loves you way more ;)

Con Amor,

Hermana Carbajal

Feb. 4th, 2014

Holaaaa!

I have been in the MTC, or the CCM (Spanish) for almost one week. I am at the west campus, which is the Spanish missionary training center. It's only Spanish, so it's pretty cool, because we are all learning the same things. This week has been one of the most amazing, crazy, emotional, exhausting, spiritual weeks of my life. I've learned to let go of my life and let my Heavenly Father take control. I have never felt more assured in my decisions, in my entire life. When people say that your mission is the greatest growing experience of your life, they are not kidding. I have never felt the Lord's hand more in my life than this past week! I cry like every day. haha. Don't worry, they're good tears. I feel myself growing closer to my Savior, more and more each day. I have never wanted to just sit and pray for hours, thanking my Heavenly Father for the constant blessings in my life.

I have seen so many miracles since I've been here. I see the Gospel in whole new perspective and light. I always knew I had a testimony, and that I loved the Gospel, but I never knew how much of a passion I had for sharing it. I've learned I'm like reallllllly bad at Spanish haha. But, it's okay. Everyday, the Lord offers me tender mercies even if they are as small as helping me express myself better in Spanish, or if its to have endurance to handle another 16 hour day on 5 hours of sleep. The Lord is here and he is REAL! He is so loving, and so kind, and so willing to help me through this process!

I have already taught 6 investigators!!! 6!! And they're real investigators!! Provo doesn't have missionaries that tract, so the MTC offers an invitation to investigators to come and check out the church. It's great, because we get to practice teaching and planning out lessons. It is seriously unreal. I have never realized how much love I have felt for my brothers and sisters in this world. My companion and I had our FIRST street contact yesterday! Like, a real one, we found on our own!! She was walking across the street, and we didn't even know she wasn't a member, and we just started talking to her. We talked to her for 45 minutes and found out she was an atheist and she had just moved here from New York for a change. She's been a volunteer for the MTC, but hadn't felt like she was getting much from it so she stopped. But, when we talked to her, her eyes lit up. I could see the change in her, that she hadn't even seen in herself! It was probably like 25 degrees outside, snow all around, and the three of us just stood outside, warm as can be filled with spirit and with tears in our eyes. It was amazing. SHE asked us to meet with her again, and we can't even talk about how excited we are. It's kinda tricky though, because since we are still in the MTC, we don't have ANY free time. Literally every single minute, of every single day is planned and accounted for. It's been a little bit of a struggle to get use to that, but I am doing my best. I'm be obedient, and that's all I can do. Anyway, because of that, its hard to have our own visiting time if its not already scheduled, so we're going to meet her for lunch this week :))))

My comapaƱera is AMAZING. Her name is Hermana Terrones and I LOVE HER. Like, really. We are already best friends. I can't believe how much God loves me and know I needed an amazing companion to make it through this tricky transition. We have the best district. Of all girls. That's right. All Hermanas. There are six of us and we all live together and share one bathroom. haha. It's a little crazy, but so much freaking fun. We have a blast. Since we are in the advanced program, we are basically Hispanic except for Hermana Sutherland who lived in Mexico. They are all leaving me next Tuesday, and are all going to Boston. I'm the loner leaving Wednesday, but it'll be okay :)

My time is gone but I love you all SOOOO much! Also, I will be here till the 12th so you can continue to email, write, or dear elder me (which is same day delivery) My unit number is 858.

I LOVE YOU ALL

Con amor,
Hermana Carbajal
